A couple of e-mails arrived touting a nutritional supplement containing an FDA-approved active ingredient as a treatment for cold sores. Watch out for such ads.
If something advertises itself as a “nutritional supplement,” that’s probably a euphemism for “untested and unproven.” If it says contains an “FDA-approved” ingredient, it may be a euphemism for a chemical that’s generally recognized not to do anything.
Cold sores get better on their own. No doubt they’ll get better if you use a nutritional supplement, too. If you have cold sores caused by a herpes virus, your doctor can give you a real, tested, proven effective medication to help prevent outbreaks or to shorten outbreaks when they do occur.
